18th Vis-Swim-Marathon 2016

Croatia, Island Vis, August 20th 2016

This summer the city of Vis organizes its traditional Vis Swim Marathon.
With the effort of LGBT sport clubs  QueerSport Split and  qSPORT Zagreb there are more and more LGBT participants taking part on this sporting event in the last couple of years. Since 2013 the LGBT participants make almost a quarter of all participants at this event.

Vis Swim Marathon is taking place on a 2200 meters (1,37 miles) long trail from the small island Host to the Vis city center.

Program

In addition to the regular program of the Vis Swim-Marathon, organized by the city of Vis, QSS organizes a queer program for the, in the meanwhile, more and more growing number of LGBT audience.

plesnjaQ (Facebook and web page) - once a month taking place in Split, the largest LGBT Party on the Croatian coast. In August, the party moves to the island of Vis and is taking place in the evening after the marathon.

Besides the Party-program the QSS usually surprises with additional cultural and entertainment program in the week of the marathon or in the evening after the marathon.

The Island and the City

The city of Vis is situated in the northeastern part of the island with a same name, hidden in a well protected bay.

Due to its strategically important position in the Adriatic this island, since the end of World War II and until 1991, was declared a military zone and therefore closed to the visits of foreign nationals. The remains of military infrastructure in the northeastern and northwestern part of the Vis bay witness the almost forgotten presence of the Yugoslav National Army on the island.

Now days there are only around 2000 residents in the city of Vis, and on the whole island only around 3500.

More and more tourists visit this island every year. Changes in the local lifestyle are noticeable on a daly basis, but in the same time Vis still gives its visitors the same old, irresistible Mediterranean charm and offers stress and bustle free living.
